Monday’s Extreme Homebrew Challenge at Jose Pistoles was tasty, drunken fun. The beers on tap that the local Homebrewers brought to the table were uniquely crafted, and most of them had a nice high alcohol content too! Second only to the incredible beers being poured, was the amazing energy and love of brewing in a room full of Homebrewers.
There was a wealth of knowledge exchanged and unusual ingredients shared (like rum, mint, chipotle-pepper), and the bar provided a very pleasant atmosphere.

Towards the end of the night (after the Awards for the Extreme Homebrew Challenge had finally been announced) the brewers were laughing, some of them slightly leaning, still learning from one another and spreading their love of beer.

Mad props to Geroge & Nancy of Home Sweet Homebrew for putting together such an amazing event, and continuing to support Philadelphia’s Homebrewers!

Pretty sweet crawl (and by the end some of us were crawling fo’ sho). Every bar on the crawl was crowded - but even though there was barely room to breathe the energy was good vibes, good times. Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar was the clear winner in atmosphere for the night. Each time someone entered they were welcomed warmly with a resounding ‘heoy’.

We, were pleasantly surprised with P.O.P.E, which had quite possibly the best beer selection of the crawl bars.
Check the beer page for our personal tasting of the night’s best brews.

It’s $12 for a beer at 5 bars: P.O.P.E., 1601, SPTR, The Dive, and Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar. Heres the map

I’m excited to check out P.O.P.E because it’s the only one out of those bars that I haven’t been to. 1601, The Dive and SPTR all have an excellent selection of bottled beers and rotating taps including some of our favorite local breweries. Ray’s which only has yueng ling and pbr on tap does have a few decent bottles but its more about the ambiance (or lack there of) then the beer selection at Ray’s.

I hope to see you there because It’s sure to be a drunken romp down Passyunk.

I just built this template in 1hr. Seriously, it felt REAL good.

PhillyBetterBeer.com has been in our domain family for quite some time now. Originally, we wanted to build a full-featured beer-lover’s community site for the Philadelphia Area that included a locater powered by the Google Maps API to help thirsty Philadlephian’s find the nearest better beer bar. Then we realized these guys were already doing that. (And doing it well, fo’sho)

The domain laid dormant for a few months BUT with Philly Beer Week 2008 quickly approaching we decided to build a site to map our tasting this year, and help coordinate our beer-loving friends. Also, because we met so many people last year and promptly lost contact with most of them, we’re hoping PhillyBetterBeer might serve as a point of contact and perhaps help grow an online community of HomeBrewers in Philly.

Let us know what you think.
